I think that this would have put a lot of people off and initially, I didn't understand why she went there- BUT I do believe that it was explained.
Sex is dominance to V - obviously- but the important thing to remember is that it was what he was taught. It was the only way that he had sex so he completely de humanized the person that he was with. It was never about attraction.
Butch was the first person that he actually cared about and V didn't understand what to do with that emotion. He confused his affection for Butch as love and I think he confused the love and intimacy as 'wanting" him. I think even Butch confused the two - intimacy and love for sex.
Oddly enough, I was a little sad when Butch was replaced by Jane but in the end all friendships suffer that type of loss. Perhaps some here might even recall similar situations when they were younger and we were replaced my our best friend's boyfriend or girlfriend. There is a certain amount of "jealousy" there that I don't think can be denied.
Anyway - I didn't understand why JR went down that road initially but it made a lot of sense as I read on and put their relationship into the context that I outlined above.
Does that make sense to anyone or do you think that I am rationalizing??

I totally agree. Vishous didn't understand what "love" was. He'd never had someone care about him the way Butch does and he confused those feelings for sexual attraction. I think there may be just a bit of sexual attraction between Butch & V, I think the way Butch embraced V during the initiation ceremony reflects that on his end. But I think that attraction serves an ultimate purpose....
Without that attraction they would never be able to embraced each other and have the transfer of good and evil. In a way they have an exchange that is almost sexual and is very intimate. Have you read the slices of life story on the BDB fan site? If not, read it or I'll send you a copy. It's very revealing.
Also, by introducing the readers to the idea of two men having a loving relationship she has set the foundation for the Qhuinn & Blay eventually hook up
All of this is of course IMHO. _________________ Cougar

I think you two have hit the nail on the head. Had J.R. delved too deeply into that area, she would have lost readers. I've gotten some of my friends hooked on the BDB series, and their comments have always been that the didn't enjoy V's book as much as the others. It didn't offend me, but I still think that is a touchy area of a lot of readers.
I was very happy with the display between Butch and V at Butch's initiation ceremony that she included. I wish she could post an "alternate" version of the feelings between Butch and V for those of us willing and wanting to read it.
