In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other - vampire warriors, defenders of their race...John Matthew has been through his vampire transition and taken to the life of the Brotherhood with a vengeance, but he still can't shake the nightmare of his past and is unsure of his future as a warrior hero. He's made a promise to honour the Brotherhood and their fight with the slayers at all costs, until the love of his life is kidnapped and he is forced to make a choice that could change his life and the Brotherhood's forever... _________________ Cougar

OK, I just finished and I have to say that I didn't really care for it. I REALLY looked forward to this book and I REALLY wanted to like it.....but it felt disjointed .
I was VERY upset that the Blay & Qhuinn issue was left so open. I also felt that Lash's demise was too easy. The sub story with Murhder left like it was added as an after thought .
And I REALLY thought more would be set up for the next book with Pahyne & Manny.
Now all of this is only MHO. You may feel differently. _________________ Cougar

BUMMER - I just started this book last night (had to finish up the Georgina Kincaid series first) and I too have/had great expectations for this book. I seem to like what you like, I'll let you know what I think in a few days.

I'm going to re-read it and see if I missed some details. After I re-read Phury's book I liked it better so we'll see _________________ Cougar

I liked the book, but it did jump around some. I think the ground work was being laid out for more stories. I did like there was more of Darius and Tohrment's past and that did answer a question I had. I would like to know more about Darius' past and read that come full circle. Of course, Tohrment needs a HEA and I would have loved to have read a Blay and Qhuinn hook up.

I think Blay and Qhuinn's story is going to be after Payne and Manny's. I had commented privately about this to a couple people: I think that Blay is trying to move on because at this point Qhuinn is not ready to accept his feelings for Blay. Now that Blay is getting to know Saxton, he is realizing what he feels for Blay. Look how long it took for Xhex and John to get together. I think this story is laying the groundwork for a deeper relationship between the two.
I was really scratching my head over the whole Murhder side story. After I realized who the "ghost" was, I was wondering if this was a sort of penance he was doing. He lost it with Xhex. Maybe he is trying to help others realize what they have before it's gone? Weird, but sort of a vampire Dear Abby, LOL! It still felt out of place to me.
Lash...what can I say about him? As much as I wanted to see Xhex end him for what he did to her, I almost wish it would have taken longer. He was transforming to be more like his father. I would have been interested to see how things would have been handled if there were two of them. It would be ugly for sure...however, as easily as it seemed that the Omega tossed his Golden Boy aside, I almost get the feeling he was intending to purge any weakness. Because of Lash's vampire side, he needed to have the blood of a female lesser to sustain him. Did the Omega not foresee that? I guess we'll never know.
And Xhex...OMG I love her character! This was the first story where I felt that JRW wrote a strong female character. And she admitted herself that she didn't know the shellans as well when she was writing them. I only hope she will do Payne justice in the next book.
Whew! That's more than my two cents worth, but I'm so glad I can discuss it now!! Let's here what the rest of you think! _________________ Never settle for less than butterflies

I liked this book. While we had a few side stories going on, I really liked the way it all came together at the end. I was glad for Xhex that her mother was there for her when she wed John, I wondered where JRW was going with the No'One character. I'm glad John and Tohr made amends and I honestly had a tear when Tohr went back to his and Wellsie's house trying to make peace with her and the baby's untimely demise. I agree I would have liked to seen Lash transform into his father's form and the complications with that scenario, but we'll never find that one out. I really also liked the connection with Darius and Tohr and then Tohr and John, seems like it came full circle and adding Xhex marrying John just seemed right to me. I would have liked John to discover he had been reincarnated, since he was having flashbacks and de jas vu, but maybe JRW is saving this for a future storyline or not.
Interesting that Mhurder is going to be in the next book and now we have Payne's and Manny's storylines as well.
I don't think we've seen the last of Quinn and Blay's lives intertwine yet, I think there will be more to come.

I finally finished the book and I enjoyed it. I would not claim it as my favorite of the BDB series but I liked it. The John and Xhex relationship was very good, Murhder was a set up for future books so I was OK with that, I liked Darius and Tohrment of the past (although I had thought that John was going to realize he was really Darius in this book), I was hoping for just a little more Quinn/Blay/Saxton, but I know they have a spot later on, I was also hoping to see a little more of all of the brothers and their shellans and I think we could see Lash again, once he is killed and not absorbed by Butch he goes back to his father and I thought I had read that the Omega can bring him back, didn't he do that with a fore-lesser in a previous book? I assume the next book will start right when this one finished, they will bring Manny to operate on Payne.
So........I did enjoy the book and it left me just how I'm sure JR Ward wanted it to, I am guessing and questioning what is to come.

Good points Lander. I think When I re-read it I'm going to enjoy it more. I was rushed and had to read it in many small sessions. I think that may be one reason it didn't "flow" for me. I am SOOOOOO waiting for the next one, per JR herself it will be April 2011 And her other series, The Fallen Angles, has another book in October I beleive the title is Crave. _________________ Cougar

With:
Lash
I also feel that it was too easy defeating him..
I mean with all the trouble he gave to the Brotherhood and all..
But I don't think it's the end for him..
I mean, the ultimate end..
Remember he is half immortal evil..
He is too valuable a villan to let him rest in peace..
Mhurder
Let us not give up hope..
I don't think he will suffer all the way 'til the end..
He is a great brother afterall and he deserve happiness too..
John
How I wish he could remember his past life or that someone will find the connection in the library where they write and place the life story of the Brothers..
I forgot what it's called..
Anywho..
Yeah, so that Beth could finally met her father..
Qhuinn and Blay
I want them together so bad, it hurts..
I really cried when Quinn did not fight for Blay when it's so obvious they love each other so much..
