In my opinion, the first several Anita Blake books were fantastic! They had a storyline, and I couldn't stop turning the pages. Then the "ardeur" hit, and the necromancer story all went to
Laurell K. Hamilton, in my opinion, took an amazing character with amazing storylines and turned it all into bed-time with several sex partners with very little story. I am just very disappointed.
I love erotica as much as the next person, but I was reading this series for the necromancer storyline, not the 6, 8, 10, etc. guys that fed the "ardeur" for Anita.
The author also doesn't seem to be able to decide if she wants Anita to be a vampire, a lycanthrope, or a human.
It is also very unbelievable that so many hot guys would be "feeding her ardeur" and each (other than Richard) having absolutely no problem with her doing so -- but heaven forbid they even flirt with someone else. Anita can sleep with as many as she wants, but does not allow the same from her men. I realize it's fiction, but it has become ridiculously unbelievable.
I still read the series, but only because I am familiar with the characters, and I am hoping Ms. Hamilton goes back into her original writing style for this character. She starts a story now and I get really excited about the story and where it's going to go and then every 5 or 10 minutes, she's neglecting the story and "feeding the ardeur." It just sometimes makes me think, "here we go again . . . " and roll my eyes and put the book down.
Just a bit disappointed is all. I've talked to several people that feel the same way. Just wanted to see what other people thought of it if they've read them all.
In additon: I left a very nice message for Laurell K. Hamilton about this, but her moderator deleted it. I used the word "adult relations" and she said all I meant was "porn" and it was rude. I guess you're not allowed to ask legitimate questions on that site unless they're all positive -- what a waste of feedback the author could use. Also, anyone who knows me on any other message board knows I'm not "rude" about anything I comment on.

I know there are many Anita Blake fans that have not liked the change in her story line. I think it was around book 10 that the sex increased and got a little kinky. I loved it! I think the books still have pretty good plots running with the sex scenes and the sex isn't just the man and girl fall in love and have incredible sex (ie Grace/Julian, Eric/Sookie, Bones/Cat, Achernon/Tori, etc, just to mention some of my favorites), it's new and refreshing, a little out there, but fun and different. I've enjoyed the ride, but I understand why some do not like it.

The series is definitely worth reading. Read them in order because they build on themselves, the characters personalities and plot lines. There is no sex in the first few books, but that is all part of developing what happens later, by book 10 you will be glad you got there and by book 10 I wanted to be Anita Blake in the bedroom (any bedroom, room, car, limo......).

After about the first 5 to 8 books, with the exception of Obsidian Butterfly, the Anita Blake series SUCKS!
I was majorly hooked on this series, but the author screwed it up, big time with the "ardeur." The only reason I read 17 books in this series is because I was waiting for the Anita from the first several books to return, but she never did. I no longer care if she ever returns now. I'm done with this series. Very disappointing. I was a "die hard fan."
If you're looking for a fantastic series that has actual storylines and plots . . . look elsewhere. If all you want to read is porn (and really badly written porn at that) go for this series.
If an author is going to disregard a storyline, the porn better be good. It isn't.
If all you want is sex, sex, sex, with no storyline, you'll love this series.
